Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.
Did you know that India has the highest number of illiterate children in the world? Majority of our children leave primary education and start working from a very young and tender age to support their families. Many of them only dream to wear good clothes or eat good food or have someone taking care of them.
Shopping is caring is an initiative by ChupaRustam to help these children get the gift of knowledge so that they are able to support themselves and maybe one day enjoy the same lifestyle people like us have.
Why do we do it?
While we were working on the app to launch as soon as possible. One of us was reading an article on the education system of India and we were shocked to read the statistics. At 400 million children India has the world's largest child population and less than half of India's children between the age 6 and 14 go to school. We have the highest number of school dropouts and we consider India to be a superpower by 2020. This got us thinking, we are making a product that has the potential to save people so much of money, if only 1 rupee could be donated for every availed offer we would be able to impact two lives at once and do our part in the development of India.
The retail outlets came forwards to help. Since then we have integrated this model into our way of business making it a BIG WIN-WIN for all of us. The shopkeepers sell their items by giving out Exclusive offers to customers, the customers buy their favourite product and in turn save money and the outlet donates Rs. 1 towards child education.
How Does It work?
Through the shopping is Caring initiative the retail outlets donate Rs. 1 for every redeemed offer to Kartavya and which in turn goes towards the education of kids in slums on India. You can be truly proud that your weekend shopping spree which resulted in your savings has helped some kid somewhere to continue his/her education.
What is Kartavya?
Kartavya is an NGO that is committed towards educating the slum children. It is completely managed by college students and has chapters in many places across the country.
